The majority of the demolition is to be completed by the end of April.

The building was constructed under the ownership of David Maxwell by builder Duncan McKay in 1882 as the offices for Maxwell’s business, Paris Foundry and Agricultural Works, which was established in 1859, and employed between 30 and 40 people.

Charles Walker purchased a portion of the lands in 1914 and established Walker Press Ltd. in 1916. The property has a long commercial and industrial history related to printing that began around 1914, employing upwards of 70 workers in the 1980s and ’90s. The building was sold out in 2021.

The public notice says the owners of the property consulted with the Brant Heritage Committee and a heritage evaluation was done. The committee didn’t recommend the designation of the building under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The notice says the property owners have provided the county with a demolition plan “to safely remove the existing building materials and minimize the impact to the neighboring properties.”

No development applications had been submitted for the properties as of March 22. Applications follow a process, says the notice, that includes public input.
