Martinique: the reasons for the anger

Despite the curfew tensions between protesters and police remain high

In Martinique, anger is still brewing, after having been shaken in recent weeks by a veritable wave of urban violence, on the sidelines of the movement against the high cost of living. This is what once again ignited the powder in Martinique. Food prices 40% higher on average than those in mainland France, 11 euros for example for a pack of sandwich bread in Fort-de-France compared to 1 euro 45 in Paris, a pack of 6 bottles of water at more than 11 euros compared to less than 4 in mainland France.

Fifteen years after the major demonstrations and strikes of 2009, the shopping basket is exploding again, an endemic disease in the West Indies, “addicted to imports”, denounces Rodrigue Petitot, the leader of the movement against the high cost of living, the famous RR-PRAC , the gathering for the protection of Afro-Caribbean peoples and resources.
