“Electric cars are very expensive and in the state we have with the economy, those steps are difficult to take,” says Tommy Letzén at the industry organization MRF. Photo: Anders Wiklund/TT
Fuel prices have been pushed down and diesel is at its lowest level in three years. This means an even tougher situation for the electric car market.
– This is currently a wallet issue, says Tommy Letzén at the industry organization MRF.
Mobility Sweden predicted a gloomy year for the electric car market and so far that forecast seems to be correct. In July, 5,516 electric cars were registered, a decrease of almost 15 percent compared to July last year.
If you look at the first six months of the year, the number of new registrations has decreased by roughly 19 percent.
Several things influence the reduced desire to buy an electric car. The dismal economy of recent years is a factor. But lower prices for both petrol and diesel also contribute to slowing down electrification.
– When we get a change, which we got with the reduction obligation and now with price reductions on fuel, it will not be beneficial for the electric car despite the government’s intended proposal in the autumn budget for a small increase in biofuel levels to ten percent, says Tommy Letzén of the industry organization MRF.

Typhoon Shanshan dumps record rain as storm moves across Japan.
The storm is one of the strongest to hit the country in decades.
Five million people have been told to evacuate and thousands of households are without power. The rainfall and strong winds have caused several deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure.
Around 80 people were injured, most of them with minor injuries from broken glass, as the typhoon’s winds smashed windows and ripped bricks from roofs on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four major islands.
Flooding has also caused traffic chaos, with blocked roads and landslide warnings. Hundreds of domestic flights have been cancelled, as has the Shinkansen high-speed train between Tokyo and Osaka.
Climate change has led to typhoons forming closer to the region’s coastlines and intensifying faster, according to a study published in July.
