In 2024, Netflix will once again release some promising original films that you should definitely keep on your screen. The Snow Company is the new film by JA Bayona, who most recently released the Lord of the Rings series on Amazon in position: He directed the first two episodes of The Rings of Power. He also sat in the director’s chair for Jurassic World 2 and Seven Minutes After Midnight.

The survival drama The Snow Society is based on the novel La society de la nieve by Pablo Vierci. In it, the author describes the disaster of Flight 571 in 1972, in which 29 of the 45 passengers died. The plane was actually supposed to bring a Uruguayan rugby team from Uruguay to Chile.

However, over the Andes there is a fateful encounter with a mountain. In the collision, the aircraft loses a wing and is torn in two. The people who survive the crash then have to 72 days in the icy environment fight for survival. Particularly tricky: the question of food.

Many of the faithful rugby players struggle with the idea human flesh (of deceased colleagues), which leads to major conflict within the group. However, given their situation, they have little choice. If they want to survive, they have to cross boundaries that no human wants to cross.

  • Survival (1993): The Hollywood version of the story was directed by Frank Marshall, who produced the Indiana Jones films, among others, and is based on the book Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read back. Ethan Hawke stars in the adaptation.
  • Now we can be curious to see how The Snow Company compares to the other film adaptations. There are already advance praises: Spain is sending Bayona’s work as Best International Film into the Oscar race. It hasn’t been nominated yet, but The Snow Company has been on the shortlist for the category since December with 14 other films. The nominations will be announced at the end of January.
