Carried by the play of Lina El Arabi, Alexandre Zeff brings to life on the stage of the Théâtre de la Tempête the novel “ May the Tiger lament over you » by Emilienne Malfatto, Goncourt’s first novel in 2021. A play with the appearance of a Greek tragedy which transports us to Iraq, on the human and societal drama of honor killings.

She will die. She knows it. She is going to be executed. Because she committed a crime. Her crime was to have become pregnant without being married. Her misfortune is that her lover is dead, killed in combat, on a battlefield. So there will be no marriage, no forced marriage.

To safeguard the family’s honor, she must die. And it is his older brother who will carry out the sentence. Nothing can stop it. She knows it. She will die. It looks like a Greek tragedy, but we are not on the shores of the Mediterranean in Antiquity, but in Iraq, on the banks of the Tigris.

In the play, the character played by Lina El Arabi has neither first nor last name. Perhaps deep down she represents all women. Based on the incisive novel by Emilienne Malfatto, Alexandre Zeff stages a polyphonic show in chiaroscuro, and combines the masculine and feminine arts.
