LG announces new brighter OLED panel technology for televisions

When it comes to OLED panels, progress goes through light. This is confirmed every year by LG Display, the one and only supplier of OLED panels for the entire market.
Indeed, the “screen” division of the Korean giant presents every year, or almost, a new panel brighter than that of the previous year. In 2022, the novelty is therefore called OLED EX and it is, you will understand, brighter than the OLED EVO unveiled in 2021.

Since this panel could be found in most of the high-end OLED models on the market this year, it is particularly interesting to look at what it brings from a technological point of view. Because if light is its main asset, it is not the only one.
Indeed, with the EX (for Evolution and eXperience), LG Display announces a gain in brightness of up to 30% on certain models. To achieve this, the slab manufacturer acted on the material level, using deuterium, but also on the software level. Indeed, a new algorithm would make it possible to manage more precisely the millions of pixels that make up the panel (up to 33 million on an 8K panel).

OLED EX: new promises of light

The other benefit of the OLED EX is its finesse. OLED screens, already very thin, may still lose a size since in its presentation model, the manufacturer has managed to reduce the thickness of the border from 6 mm to 4 mm.
It remains to be seen what this new generation of panel will bring to screens sold in stores. Remember that LG Display’s predictions are optimistic to say the least.
Judging by the test results of our lab, the famous EVO panel, present on the LG G1 or the Panasonic JZ2000, certainly improved the brightness, but much less than the 20% promised when the technology was announced at the CES 2021.

It will also be necessary to look at what will be the response of the competition, starting with that which also comes from Korea. Indeed, Samsung is tipped to launch its new display technology, the QD-OLED in the coming hours. In 2022, the image battle promises to be intense once again.
