  • Erdogan: No Sweden in NATO next month

At the same time as the NATO meeting in Ankara, there is now a new statement from Turkish President Erdogan about the Swedish NATO application, reports Reuters.

The message from the president is that Sweden should do more to ease Turkey’s concerns about terrorism before the regime can approve Sweden’s NATO application, according to state-controlled Daily Sabah.

“We cannot have a positive attitude towards Sweden’s NATO accession under the current circumstances. NATO cannot force us to take Sweden in without doing something against terrorism. If Sweden does not resolve this issue, we cannot happily approve Sweden’s membership in Vilnius,” Erdogan said, referring to the upcoming NATO summit in mid-July.

Turkey cannot look favorably on a Swedish NATO application as long as “terrorists” are allowed to protest in Stockholm, according to the president.

According to Reuters, Erdogan intends to once again clarify his position in the talks with Sweden at the NATO meeting in Ankara today.

Erdogan reportedly made the statement to reporters after returning from a trip from Azerbaijan shortly before the meeting, according to Reuters.
