Australia’s bushfires widened the ozone hole

The smoke from the huge forest fires in Australia in 2019-2020 caused the ozone hole over Antarctica to grow by ten percent.

That’s what researchers warn about in a new study published in the journal Nature, writes TT.

During the fires, over a million tons of smoke were pumped into the atmosphere.

The ozone hole was created as a result of human pollution. In recent decades, global agreements have given the ozone layer a chance to heal.

The researchers behind the new study are now worried that more frequent forest fires, as a result of climate change, could slow that recovery.

It is not only bigger and stronger than the Swedish crayfish – it is also more aggressive.

Larger marten kill more prey than it eats. Now the invasive species has been discovered in Vättern’s beach zone, writes TT.

When the predatory marl invades, several local species often decline sharply, or disappear. It has already caused concern in Britain and Germany.

“The probability that it will spread around large parts of Lake Vättern within a few years is unfortunately high,” says Ulf Bjelke, limnologist at the SLU Artdata Bank in a press release.

Eradicating the animal is considered impossible – however, it is possible to avoid spreading to other waters.

“Make sure your fishing gear and bath toys are dry and clean before using them in another body of water,” says Lina Tomasson, coordinator for invasive alien species at the Norwegian Sea and Water Authority.
