Johnny Depp called for a change to the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 script so that Jack Sparrow wouldn’t have to compete against a woman

Johnny Depp called for a change to the Pirates of

Pirate fans watch the Pirates of the Caribbean series primarily because of Johnny Depp. Despite all the controversy surrounding the actor, this can hardly be shaken. Accordingly, his decision-making power in the franchise has long been great. According to Pirates of the Caribbean 5 writer Terry Rossio, he had a script completely changed. Namely, because he didn’t want to fight a woman, as our colleagues from Espinof write. The film is available to stream on Disney+*.

Johnny Depp didn’t want a woman as an antagonist in Pirates of the Caribbean 5

In Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Depp’s Jack Sparrow faces off against the ghost pirate Salazar (Javier Bardem). However, a female villain was originally planned, as Rossio writes in his blog:

My version of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 sorted out, because there was a female villain in it. Johnny Depp feared this might be redundant after Dark Shadows, which also features a female enemy. Maybe the script was just bad.

Rossio was eventually replaced by Jeff Nathanson (terminal). If his assessment is correct, Depp’s objection must seem bizarre to many fans. What should “redundant” mean in this context? There are five years between the two films, so confusion is impossible. Plus, the Pirates of the Caribbean adventures are full of male villains. In 14 years, not a single redundancy argument has thinned their ranks.
