To get a message across to someone, you might as well send it to the newspaper they are used to reading. This is why Joe Biden chose the wall street journal to publish his op-ed on tech giants. He calls on the two parties in Congress to overcome their divisions to better regulate the sector.

Three priorities

The American president sees three priority projects. First, regulate the use of personal data and better protect it. This data and its monetization are at the heart of the model of certain companies. Then reintroduce competition. Consumers sometimes find themselves trapped in ecosystems from which they can only exit with difficulty. And finally, making social media responsible for the content they publish without control, with consequences for the mental health of young people or even for the polarization of society.

This polarization, particularly political, could kill this initiative in the bud. Yet, for sometimes different reasons, both Democrats and Republicans are often critical of tech giants. Joe Biden is no doubt hoping that the common fear of seeing these behemoths become really too powerful might inspire them to come together.
