Jenna Ortega thinks Wednesday is misunderstood — and wishes for a darker anti-hero for Season 2

Jenna Ortega thinks Wednesday is misunderstood — and wishes for

Wednesday is one of the most popular new characters of the 2022 series. And her actress Jenna Ortega is probably the goth queen’s biggest fan. She worked on the now famous Wednesday dance, learned archery, German and fencing for the character.

But what’s next for Wednesday on Netflix? Jenna Ortega has proven multiple times that she puts a lot of thought into the direction of the Addams daughter. In the safe 2nd season she wants to stop a development that started in the first season and that she doesn’t like.

For Jenna Ortega, Wednesday is not a typical heroine, but the creators see it differently

In an interview, Jenna Ortega talked about how she envisions Wednesday developing. Not for the first time she said it quietly criticism of the authorswho have a different understanding of the character than they do.

I kind of want it to be darker. I want her to get down to business and not play it safe. Because there is [in der ersten Staffel] lots of script lines where she wants to save the school and stuff like that […]

That sounds good little after Harry Potter. In fact, Wednesday changes from about the 4th episode of the first season. It becomes much more open, warmer and, well: more boring. Ortega noticed that too, as she noted in another interview. According to her, director Tim Burton wanted a tough and emotionless Wednesday. The other directors preferred a more open version. Jenna Ortega prefers the Tim Burton version.

I think I want her to continue to follow an antihero path and less that of a typical heroine. Wednesday thrives on being different than characters from Narnia and Harry Potter

Enid and Wednesday

Showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough will continue to open up Wednesday to the social concepts she so loathes in Season 2. Kind of like friendship. And that’s right and will make Enid (Emma Myers) happy. But it’s also a fine line to walk.

Wednesday thrives on being different than characters from Narnia and Harry Potter. Many fans can identify with their rough, non-conformist manner. Just a Wednesday that’s at a beautiful sunrise, is a real Wednesday. The series must retain this unique selling point.

Of course, the main character of a series must not tread water. Wednesday needs to learn, needs to push boundaries and be challenged. And if that means making her a little kinder, that’s okay. As long as she keeps her pouty core and doesn’t turn into a well-behaved Harry Potter character.

This is the team’s tough task in Season 2. The fact that Jenna Ortega has recognized this challenge and addressed it openly shows once again what a stroke of luck she is for the series.
