Jason Statham’s $880 million sci-fi monster universe could go on – and get really absurd in the next installment

Jason Stathams 880 million sci fi monster universe could go on

There was only one trailer, but it promised everything there was to know about Meg 2: The Deep: Jason Statham would be up against three basking sharks this time. Despite the poor reviews, audiences around the world took refuge in the shark fantasy. Meg 2 has made so much money that ordering a third part is only a matter of time. You can read here what it could be about. It’s hard to believe, but the Meg films are based on a series of books.

The Jason Statham spectacle grossed more than The Flash

Meg 2 has meanwhile Grossed $352 million worldwide. That’s no comparison to the Barbenheimers of this world, but an unattainable mark for this year’s blockbusters like The Flash or Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Stath’s underwater excursion is particularly popular in China, which is unsurprising given his business model. The Chinese-American co-production takes place in the orbit of the Middle Kingdom and offers an additional incentive with action star Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior) in the second leading role. In its second home country, Meg 2 has already grossed $100 million, $30 million more than in the US.

In Germany, Meg’s love doesn’t stop either. 700,000 people wanted to see how the former transporter hit a basking shark on the nose, almost 100,000 more than in the first film Meg from 2018. In total, the two shark films have grossed around 880 million dollars worldwide.

This could be the plot of Meg 3 starring Jason Statham

With an estimated budget of $130-140 million, Meg 2 could be on its way to the black. Meg 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but as long as the shark series is in China, it could go on forever.

Luckily (for movie producers or basking shark aficionados), author Steve Alten has already written eight books. released in 2004 the third part Meg: Primal Waterswhose plot also reads exactly like an early 2000s shark novel, so a bit bizarre:

In the midst of a life crisis, Jonas takes a job as a consultant to Hollywood television producers at the Reality TV series Daredevils at. There he provides expert commentary on a competition taking place in the South Pacific. Jonas and his daughter learn they have strayed into the newest Megalodon feeding zones. Meanwhile, on the set of Daredevils, Jonas’ nemesis Michael Maren plots revenge on Jonas by using his pet meg (!) “Scarface” begins. When is Meg 3 coming?

The films have only roughly followed the originals so far (the second novel drugged sea lions, which sadly Meg 2 didn’t give us), so we have to expect deviations from the reality format.

As long as Meg 3 is not yet officially in the works, there is no reliable speculation about a launch date.
