Jason Statham fights 3 basking sharks in monster sequel

Since today Meg 2 is running: The depth in German cinemas. In it, Fast & Furious star Jason Statham dives into the wet five years after Meg to disturb basking sharks at their human lunchtime meal. In this article you will find out what to expect from the blockbuster if the movie is worth it and if there is a post credit scene in Meg 2 gives.

Environmentalist Jason Statham battles basking sharks in Meg 2

Meg 2 takes place a few years after the first part. Ex-deep sea diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) hires himself out as an environmental activist and takes care of his foster daughter Meiying (Shuya Sophia Cai) on the side. Their uncle Jiuming (martial arts star Wu Jing) explores the deep sea using a captive Meg(alodon). This is an ancient species of shark that lives far below the surface of the sea in the films.

During a dive, Jonas and Jiuming uncover an illegal operation in the Meg hunting grounds, but are pinned down by sabotage on the sea floor. In the following adventure, they not only get it with giant sea creatures (including 3 wild Megs) to do. Greedy people who stop at nothing are also at their throats.

You don’t have to have seen Meg to understand this film, since the plot is secondary anyway.

Is Meg 2: The Deep in the cinema worth it?

Meg 2 has some promising aspects on paper that could surpass its predecessor. Genre eccentric Ben Wheatley (Sightseers) is directing, there are more monsters and with Wu Jing there is an excellent action partner at Jason Statham’s side. The established world also guarantees that the story no longer needs to be explained at length.

However, if you think you can pull off an enjoyable animal horror blockbuster, you have to check out Meg 2. The sequel rises dark underwater CGI action in the first third, which takes away the joy of sharks. On land, the fishing tour gains momentum, but not creativity when it comes to depicting the beasts. Neither their size nor their majestic threat potential are used effectively.

FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen forgives in his criticism of Meg 2: The Deep 2 out of 5 stars and writes:

The sharks suddenly no longer pose such a great threat in the crowdthe twists are predictable, the villains are rarely stupid (and sometimes played really badly) – and as far as exploring the underwater world is concerned, Meg 2 was really unlucky that the theatrical release of Avatar 2: The Way Of Water was only a mere nine months ago is…

Meg 2 is therefore primarily worthwhile for hardcore Jason Statham fans and guppy breeders.

Sit or Not: Does Meg 2 Have a Post-Credit Scene?

Meg 2 does not have an end credits scene. Anyone who ends up having to catch the bus or the next seafood buffet can confidently leave the cinema.

Whether Meg 3 is coming is not yet known. Like part 1, the shark action is based on a novel by Steve Alten. Eight books have been published so far, so there is material for sequels.

Meg 2 has been in German cinemas since August 3rd.
