The Avatar series will continue until at least 2031. James Cameron has planned five parts, but the sci-fi universe should continue to grow after that. In the current interview the director talked about Ideas for Avatar 6 and 7 spoken, which will then most likely have to be realized without him behind the camera.
James Cameron plans Avatar 6 & 7 with a change of director
In an interview with People magazine, the Avatar creator spoke about the future of the sci-fi series. Cameron probably wants to continue the science fiction franchise for a very long time, but one Change in the director’s chair then seems to become inevitable:
We’ve finished writing the fifth film and I have ideas for Six and Seven, although I’ll probably pass the baton at that point. I mean, mortality catches up with you. But we enjoy what we do. We love it. We work with great people.
In the People interview, the director compares his Avatar series to the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises, which continued to expand even without the involvement of their original creators.
Cameron is just 69 years old. If Avatar 5 hits theaters in 2031 as planned, the director would at that point slowly approaching 80. It only sounds logical that he is already thinking about handing over the directorial role for Avatar sequels after Part 5.
