It’s a very divisive question: whether or not you should sleep with your socks on at night? What are the benefits? Are there any risks? Here is the answer.

A debate is currently raging on social networks – in particular on TikTok –, fiercely opposing two camps: should you sleep with your socks on at night or not? Each Internet user shares their experience or advice. Some videos even exceed 100,000 views on the Chinese social network! Tue love for some, a real necessity for the chilly, the debate divides even in the scientific community. So what is it?

Several studies have proven that we fall asleep faster with socks. In fact, they warm the feet, allowing the blood vessels to dilate, thus promoting better blood circulation and cooling the body – this is what we call thermoregulation. It’s this cooling that tells the brain it’s time to go to bed. According to a study by two Korean researchers, those who wear socks take on average seven minutes less to fall asleep than others. In addition, it is through the extremities – the hands and feet – that excess heat is evacuated. So, if you ever feel too hot when going to bed, your body will evacuate the excess through this route. Not to mention that it is particularly useful for people with circulation problems, such as those affected by Raynaud’s disease.

However, this practice is not without its drawbacks, particularly in terms of hygiene. Wearing socks for an extended period of time, especially at night, can encourage the growth of bacteria and fungi. With feet locked in a warm, humid environment, this creates a breeding ground for infections such as athlete’s foot or fungal infections.

And that’s when it comes to clean socks! A British mattress seller analyzed samples taken from socks worn during the day and discovered the presence of bacteria usually found on the floor, on doormats or in cockroach droppings. They can cause skin rashes, urinary and respiratory illnesses, and even pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems. Finally, note that socks that are too tight can hinder blood circulation, causing discomfort and potentially long-term health problems.

Also, sleeping with socks has undeniable advantages, but you have to take some precautions. It is imperative to wear clean, loose stockings. Avoid socks made of synthetic material and favor those made of natural fibers, such as cotton or cashmere. Close your eyes, and let yourself be carried away!
