On December 26, 2004, a powerful 9.1 magnitude earthquake shook the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The earthquake triggered tidal waves up to 15 meters high, which hit the coasts, crushing houses and pushing boats hundreds of meters inland.
Thursday marks exactly 20 years since the natural disaster in which 230,000 people from more than ten countries died.
179 Finns died in the disaster and 250 were injured, the most in Khao Lak, Thailand.
The tsunami caused the most destruction on the coasts of Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The worst destruction was suffered in Indonesia, where around 170,000 people died.
