The production had numerous problems, the script was rewritten several times during filming because several members of the cast complained about the poor quality. In the end, it won five Oscars and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is widely regarded as a masterpiece that revitalized the period film.

“The script was absolute garbage”: The problems with the Gladiator production
Lead actor Russell Crowe wasn’t initially convinced by the script, as he said in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine. In fact, according to Crowe, the actors only had 32 pages of the script available when they arrived on set, while the rest was written and changed several times over the course of filming. During filming, the actors repeatedly complained about problems with the script. The main character lacked depth, and some lines of dialogue contained serious historical inaccuracies or had to be completely improvised.
However, this did not affect the quality of the final product. Perhaps what made Gladiator so good was its collaborative approach, welcoming feedback from the cast, and the numerous improvisations.
Gladiator 2 will be released in 2024
After numerous screenwriters failed in the task of writing a sequel or prequel, Ridley Scott finally announced in 2021 that the script for Gladiator 2 was finished.
