Israel: Will increase aid into Gaza temporarily

According to a statement from Israel’s War Cabinet, the aid is to “prevent a humanitarian crisis”. The cabinet also says that the aid is essential for Israel to be able to continue and achieve its aims with the war.

The aid will go via the port of Ashdod, which is located north of the northern border of the Gaza Strip, and the crossing at Erez, on the border. That crossing has been closed since October 7 last year, when Hamas carried out its terror attack on Israel and the war began.

  • Biden warned Netanyahu

Israel’s announcement to increase aid comes just hours after a half-hour phone call between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In the conversation, Biden warned Netanyahu that more must be done to bring aid to the Palestinian civilians in Gaza, that the current humanitarian situation where most of the civilians are starving is unacceptable, as well as Israeli attacks on aid workers.

    “Open the port”

Israel must, according to a US National Security Council spokesperson, open the port of Ashdod to direct supplies to Gaza, open the Erez border crossing as a new route for aid into Gaza, and significantly increase the delivery of humanitarian aid from Jordan via the border crossing in the south, Kerem Shalom.
