Is Ahsoka worth it on Disney+?

We first met Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano 15 years ago in The Clone Wars animated series. The initially controversial Star Wars character developed over time into a cult character. It wasn’t until The Mandalorian that we got to see her in live action, impressively embodied by Rosario Dawson. Now she has her own series.

On August 23, 2023, the first two of a total of eight episodes of the new sci-fi adventure Star Wars: Ahsoka started on Disney+. In the Moviepilot podcast, we take a closer look at the start and discuss: Is the new Star Wars series a worthy The Mandalorian sequel – or another Boba Fett disaster?

As soon as the first episode starts with an intro scrolling text that is otherwise only known from the cinema films, it is clear: This is Star Wars. Series creator Dave Filoni celebrates his love for the sci-fi franchise with numerous visual references, close ties to his animated series Star Wars Rebels, and plenty of lightsaber action that most of the previous Disney+ series has missed.

Ahsoka is the first real Jedi series from the live-action cosmos of Star Wars. Sorry, Obi-Wan Kenobi. It provides an exciting look at the careers of different “Jedi” after the fall of the Empire. The heroic Ahsoka is held up to the renegade ex-Jedi Knight Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson in one of his last roles) as a mirror.

She fights for peace, he fights on the side of the remnants of the Empire who want to find the sinister Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). But unlike the lightsaber-wielding villain and his brutal apprentice, Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno), Ahsoka sees the light failed relationship with her own Padawan back: the Mandalorian Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo).

The conflict-ridden master-pupil relationship is the focus of the first two episodes and becomes the emotional anchor of the galactic adventure, which differs from the previous four Star Wars real-life series in several ways. What else does the new sci-fi series have to offer and whether the (not so) secret Rebels sequel works even without animation knowledge, we explore in the podcast. Have fun while listening!
