Inflation still high in the US

US core inflation, which excludes food and energy costs, rose to an annual rate of 5.1 percent in September, compared with the corresponding figure for August of 4.9 percent. In February, core inflation was 5.4 percent at an annual rate, the highest figure in four decades.

The inflation figures are carefully studied by the US central bank, the Federal Reserve (Fed), which repeatedly raises the key interest rate in an attempt to slow down inflation.

The market expects the Fed to begin tapering the pace of hikes, raising only 0.5 percentage points in December, reports CNBC with reference to forward prices.
