The Republican far-right sided with McCarthy, who over the weekend pushed through a package of bills that prevented a federal government shutdown with the support of Democrats.
In the United States, an extreme Republican representative Matt Gaetz his party colleague has made a presentation on Monday by Kevin McCarthy to remove the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Gaetz is a leading figure in the far-right bloc of Republicans, who last week sought to push through new cuts in exchange for the passage of a package of bills that blocked the shutdown of the federal government. McCarthy drew the ire of the radical wing of the Republicans when he pushed through the bill with the support of the Democrats.
It is not yet known when Gaetz’s proposal will be voted on. A simple majority is needed in the House of Representatives to pass the motion.
Gaetz, who represents the state of Florida, has previously said he believes he has enough support to unseat McCarthy.
– The only way McCarthy will be the Speaker of the House of Representatives at the end of next week is with the support of the Democrats, Gaez told the news channel on Sunday for CNN.
Republicans hold a narrow 221-212 majority in the House of Representatives, so Republican fringes won’t need many votes to oust the speaker if Democrats vote against McCarthy.
McCarthy, who was elected speaker in January, had to make concessions to the extreme fringes of his party in connection with his election. One of the concessions was a change in the rules, according to which anyone in the House of Representatives can propose a vote to remove the Speaker from his seat.
