On these two Antilles islands, the banana sector has turned in recent years to a more sustainable culture. This requires more manual labor, and therefore additional agricultural labor. Daniel Nouvet owns a small sustainable banana farm in Martinique, where the majority of the work is done manually. Unable to recruit, he almost went out of business. Unable to find Martinican employees, he resorted to foreign labour. Today, this sector could hire between 500 and 600 employees.
