In recent days, large demonstrations against the government’s so-called agent law have been organized in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

The government of Georgia has revived a bill that had already been rejected once. According to opponents, the goal is to silence non-governmental organizations.

  • Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets to oppose the bill. Organizations and media would have to register as foreign influencers if they receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad.
  • The government claims that the law would provide transparency and protect against influence attempts by foreign intelligence services, among other things. Opponents have compared the law to Russia’s much harsher “agent law”.
  • The European Union has reminded that Georgia, which is aspiring to become an EU member, has promised to finally scrap the bill that was shelved last year.
