In Beijing Lula pleads for a new world order

After a first day rather placed under the sign of the economy in Shanghai, the Brazilian president went to Beijing for a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. The opportunity to discuss the war in Ukraine and to try to establish itself as a possible mediator in this conflict with the Russians. And more broadly, Luis Iniacio Lula da Silva defended, on Saturday April 15, the idea of a new approach to international relations.

For Lula and Xi Jinping, “ the only possible way » to end the conflict in Ukraine which has been raging for 14 months is the dialogue. And the Brazilian president believes that providing weapons encourages continued fighting. He therefore appeals to Western countries:

The United States must stop encouraging war and start talking about peace. The European Union must start talking about peace, in order to convince Putin and Zelensky that peace is in the interest of the whole world. »

The Brazilian president raised the idea of creating a group of countries that would work for peace in Ukraine. In general, Lula believes that international relations should be more multipolar:

In recent years, I have tried to demonstrate to the United Nations that the geopolitical landscape of 1945 no longer exists. That the reasons that led to the creation of the UN in its current structure no longer exist, that the world has evolved. »

Lula judges that Brazil, India, Egypt, Nigeria and even Mexico should play a more central role in international relations.
