Improv comedians to host Stratford womens day event Everything is

Award-winning improv comedians Rebecca Northan and Christy Bruce will host an International Women’s Day event, Everything is Awkward, at the Stratford Country Club March 21.

Stratford residents will have the opportunity to celebrate International Women’s Day a few weeks late with an evening of improv comedy and learning to overcome their inner awkwardness.

Organized by investStratford and the Stratford Perth Center for Business, and co-hosted by award-winning improv comedians Rebecca Northan and Christy Bruce, the March 21 event, dubbed Everything is Awkward, is aimed at helping women reconnect with the in-person world through improved communication, insights into body language and eye contact, and establishing that all-important human connection as the world emerges from the virtual realm.

“This will be our first, large, live post-pandemic event. … One thing that we noticed is that when we do gather, everyone’s kind of, ‘What are the protocols? How close are we? What do we talk about?’” said Holly Mortimer, a business adviser with the Stratford Perth Center for Business.

“Rebecca Northan is an improv artist, director, actor and she’s one of our clients. We were just chatting and she said, ‘Yeah, everything is super awkward.’ From that conversation, came this entire event.”

The event, which runs from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Stratford Country Club and includes a light dinner, as well as a cash bar, will feature a short improv comedy show by Northan and Bruce before the pair take attendees through a number of non-awkward exercises focused around talking to strangers, communication, discussing business and just being comfortable talking about themselves.

“At the same time, we’ll laugh and be entertained and it won’t feel quite so intimidating,” Mortimer said. “It is a women’s day event, so it is geared towards women, but they don’t necessarily have to own a business. We have a lot of women who attend our women’s day events who are just women out in the world working, doing whatever they want to do, and they want to hang out with other like-minded women who want to connect and build a community. ”

In addition to these connections, Mortimer said the event is also a great opportunity for female business owners to network with each other and learn more about the services offered through investStratford and the Stratford Perth Center for Business.
