It’s well known: motorists like to listen to music while driving. But it can become a source of distraction. Luckily, a British study claims that certain artists help us behave well on the road.
The automobile sales site AutoTrader arrived at this observation by conducting an experiment with 17 volunteers. They had to carry out a risk perception test on the road while they listened to songs from big names in music like Beyoncé, Harry Styles and Bach. The researchers measured their ability to identify potentially dangerous situations and gave them a score out of 75.
For emergency braking, rely on Drake
It turns out that drivers were better able to spot the dangers they faced on the road when they listened to Drake’s musical repertoire. According to AutoTrader, his songs “Passionfruit” and “In My Feelings” particularly helped drivers anticipate dangerous situations, such as emergency braking.
Ariana Grande and Eminem would also be valuable allies in the car since the participants of the study who listened to them while driving obtained an honorable score of 58.5 out of 75. The songs “Thank U, next”, “7 Rings”, “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan” would have allowed them to be more focused on the road.
Favor hip-hop over classical
Generally speaking, hip-hop seems to be the style most conducive to attentive driving on the road. Half of the artists in AutoTrader’s top 10 belong to this musical genre. Pop would also have similar virtues thanks to musicians like Billie Eilish (No. 4) or Harry Styles (No. 9).
One might expect that the classical repertoire would have the same effect on motorists’ driving. But that doesn’t seem to be the case: Bach’s compositions didn’t help drivers score well on the risk perception test.
Of course, the results of this study should be taken with a grain of salt. Music in the car can be a distraction, regardless of the genre you listen to. Excessive listening volume is not compatible with the concentration necessary for driving. In addition, it is imperative to use a listening device with a speaker. Headphones and headsets cannot be used while driving. If you follow these rules, feel free to listen to the music playlist of your choice during your car rides. Just be careful not to get carried away with what you’re listening to.
