Hurricane Idalia has made landfall on Florida’s west coast in the Big Bend area north of Tampa. The area is quite sparsely populated.

In terms of strength, Idalia is now in category three, i.e. the third highest level on the scale measuring the strength of hurricanes.

At their strongest, the storm winds have been nearly 56 meters per second.

The hurricane is expected to cause dangerous storm flooding in northern Florida. A storm surge can raise the water to a height of up to 4.5 meters in some places.

In the past, up to 30 centimeters of rain has been forecast for northwest Florida.
