Hunger Games director regrets big mistake that messed up ending

The great fantasy and sci-fi series of the last decade suffered from acute divisiveness. Both Harry Potter and Twilight and later The Hunger Games released their final films in two parts. This measure didn’t really do any of the blockbusters any good. The Hunger Games series with Jennifer Lawrence suffered greatly under the split.

Director Francis Lawrence came to this conclusion a few years later, as he admitted in an interview with People.

What the Hunger Games director thinks about the dichotomy today

The suspense of the book was mercilessly interrupted when Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2 were released in cinemas a year apart. Eight years after the release of the last film, Lawrence says:

I totally regret it. I really do. I’m not sure if everyone does this, but I definitely do.

Katniss and Peeta

Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen meets her completely changed boyfriend Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) in the final scene of the first film. Fans had to wait half an eternity for the resolution. The director now understands how cruel that decision was:

If an episode on TV has a cliffhanger, you have to wait a week […] But making people wait a year seemed disingenuous to me, even if it wasn’t.

However, Lawrence also sees Advantages in the split:

In fact, we got more out of the book than we would have in the other films because you get almost four hours of screen time for the final book. But I see and understand how this has frustrated people.

Our opinion on the topic is clear anyway: The Hunger Games series messed up its ending with the split, writes editor Esther Stroh.
