Huge fantasy and sci fi universe with 45 films in planning

Lots of plastic toys sawing off the throne of Marvel and DC. Toy maker Mattel wants to bring its world-renowned franchises en masse to cinemas, a report from The New Yorker reveals. To the summer blockbuster Barbie 45 more films are to followwhich are located in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, among others. A film adaptation of the card game UNO (!) is planned.

What movies is Marvel and DC competitor Mattel planning?

As the New Yorker article reports, only 13 of the 45 planned films have been officially announced so far. These include the following titles:

  • a U.N.-Movie, which was originally supposed to play in the hip hop milieu of the US city of Atlanta
  • a movie about them Hot Wheels toy cars by Star Wars creator JJ Abrams
  • an action cracker about the box toy figures of the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, in which Vin Diesel is to star
  • a cinema version of the adventures of Barney, the famous purple dinosaur. It is aimed at adults and is being produced by Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya
  • a film about the Buzz Lightyear role model Major Matt Mason, to be played by Tom Hanks
  • another fantasy project adapting the Masters of the Universe franchise
  • Mattel has remained silent on the rest of the films currently in development. Many fans will find some of the announced projects bizarre: What could a UN film look like? Will Hot Wheels be the new The Fast and the Furious? There are no specific start dates for any of the projects. Before the sci-fi and fantasy rush: when is Barbie coming to the cinemas?

    Mattel will measure much of its catalog’s potential against the success of Barbie. The comedy from indie champion Greta Gerwig (Ladybird) arrives on July 20, 2023 to the movies. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, among others, are in front of the camera.
