House arrest for man who didnt pay restitution

A Brant County man, under orders from a Kitchener court to pay restitution to two construction equipment companies he defrauded, has been put under house arrest and ordered to get busy making payments.

Brodie James Simpson, 24, pleaded guilty to failing or refusing to comply with an order to pay $25,500 to two firms in Hamilton and Ayr. He was to pay $500 a month throughout 2017 and 2018.

“You’ve now found out this stuff doesn’t go away,” said Ontario Court Justice Robert Gee as he sentenced him.

“It catches up with you at the worst possible time,” said the judge. “So, you might as well buckle under and get ‘er done. If you don’t pay it this time, it’s going to be like Groundhog Day and we’re going to do this again in a couple of years. But you’ll probably be going to real jail next time.”

Instead, Simpson was ordered to be held under electronic monitoring in his home for two months unless he’s going to work.

He’ll be on probation for three years with an expectation that the entire $25,500 will be paid back by the end of that period.

Two jail sentences for man with numerous charges

An Ohsweken man cleared up several charges in two recent court appearances.

Wade Everett Simon, 37, was a wanted man when he was arrested by Six Nations police on Aug. 18, 2021, driving a white Trailblazer that had been reported stolen. During his arrest, Simon assaulted an officer. A search found drugs on Simon and in plain view and concealed in the vehicle. Also in the vehicle was an eight-month-old child who did not belong to either Simon nor his female passenger.

Simon pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property, assault resist arrest and failing to comply with release orders. In November, he was sentenced by Ontario Court Justice Kathleen Baker at 11 months of jail to be added to the time he was currently serving.

At the end of last August, Ontario Court Justice Gethin Edward sentenced Simon to about three months in jail after the man pleaded guilty to a 2018 charge of failing to stop for police and breaching both release and probation orders.

More jail for man who assaulted woman

A Brantford man convicted last year of threatening to kill several people and a cat was back in Ontario Court to deal with charges of threatening, intimidation and assault.

Matthew R. Urquhart, 26, of Murray Street, pleaded guilty to charges from July 2021 of assaulting a woman, using violence to prevent her from seeking medical attention, threatening to harm her and returning to contact her, against orders.

Justice Robert Gee gave Urquhart credit for serving 166 days in jail awaiting his trial and ordered him back to jail for another 103 days.

Gee also ordered Simon to seek counseling for alcohol abuse, domestic violence and psychiatric or psychological issues.
