historic drop in the number of unemployed in 2021

Once is not customary: Spain, a country which in general beats all unemployment records in Europe, has good statistics in this area. This December, the number of unemployed fell by 77,000, and the country has experienced ten consecutive months of declining unemployment. That is to say nearly 800,000 less unemployed.

Three million unemployed for an active population of 20 million, that may seem considerable, but for the socialist government of Pedro Sanchez, it is a victory. Indeed, this constitutes a significant drop in the number of unemployed, less 20% during the year 2021.

Of course, one might think of a recovery effect at the end of a pandemic new year, but it’s actually better than that since, calculators in hand, there are 140,000 less unemployed than in February 2020, the date of the outbreak of the coronavirus. Even youth unemployment, at 37.7%, the worst rate in Europe, has a record December and had a year 2021 that invites optimism.

This recovery in employment also attests to what we already knew, namely that there are three major regions generating employment in Spain, the region of Madrid and the two archipelagos of the Canaries and the Balearics.
