News24 Have talked to Emily Sonestedtassociate professor of nutrition epidemiology at Lund University and assistant professor at Kristianstad University. Sonestedt’s main focus is on clarifying the role of carbohydrate quality, mainly sugar consumption, has on health.

You have to get a certain amount of calories every day and are a large amount of calories from sugar, there is a great risk of losing other important nutrients. Sugar can thus be dangerous in an excessive amount. If you want to become more aware of how you can easily find the sugarcovers in the grocery store, Sonestedt has tips on what you can look for when you shop.

– There are some foods that can contain a lot of sugar that many may not know. For example, there may be a lot of sugar in both yogurt and cereals, says Sonestedt.

When it comes to table of contents, you should look at what comes first on the list.

– Most come first. Standing sugar in the beginning contains the product more sugar, says Sonestedt.

However, sugar can hide in different names. Sonestedt explains that you can look where it says “Total sugar” to get an overview, but there is also added sugar that can be good to keep track of.

– For example, in yogurt, there is natural sugar in the form of lactose, which can make it difficult to determine how much is natural and added. There you have to look at the names, one to have a look out for is fruit juice concentrate, it is in principle sugar and does not contain any nutrients.

So much sugar you should eat

There are recommendations according to Sonestedt on how much sugar per day a person should eat.

– The recommendation is that 10% of one’s energy, ie calories, can come from sugar. Which means that if you eat less sugar during the week, it is perfectly okay to eat a little more for the weekend. The important thing is to think about the diet in its entirety, says Sonestedt.
