The rains will last at least a couple more days, and it looks like there will be more rain for the rest of the week.
Heavy rains have hit southern Europe. The worst floods are currently in the Balkan countries.
The river Una between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina has overflowed its banks. The Croatian government has called in 300 army soldiers to help build flood defenses and help people in distress.
A state of emergency has been declared in the town of Kostjanica, located on the Bosnian border.
The Zrmanja River, which flows through the town of Obrovac, has risen so high that the town’s residents have to use boats to get around.
There have also been floods in Serbia and Montenegro.
Meteorologists have given rain warnings (you switch to another service) to a wide area in southern Europe, from Italy to Hungary and Austria.
According to the forecasts, the rains will continue at least until Wednesday. On the other hand, the rains will be needed, because Italy in particular has suffered from drought.
There were floods in Italy already at the beginning of May. At that time, naturalists thought that the rains would not really ease the drought situation, because the heavy rain that came quickly did not have time to soak into the hardened ground. Now the situation might be better in that respect.
According to the forecast, the rains will stop during Thursday-Friday, but a new area of rain will rise from the direction of Africa for the rest of the week.
