Skyfall has hit southern Sweden in several places during Tuesday evening.

Floods have affected Nässjö and Norrköping, among others.

SMHI has during the day warned of torrential rain and strong thunder in the south-eastern parts of the country between 11.00 and 23.00. In a short time, large amounts of rain are expected and both buildings and infrastructure can be affected, reads the yellow torrential warning.

Yellow warnings for heavy rain apply to Halland, southern and eastern Västra Götaland County, Jönköping County, northern Kronoberg, northern Kalmar County, Östergötland, southern Örebro County and southern Sörmland.

Floods affect Nässjö

Several local media reported on flooding in the Nässjö area around 6 p.m. The emergency services have had to deal with around 50 rain-related incidents during the evening.

The area outside the station in Nässjö was submerged in large masses of water. A central mall had to be evacuated and several shops were damaged.

Just before 5 p.m., Nässjö resident Johanna Pettersson had to run through the storm.

– I ran 400 meters to the car and had to squeeze water out of my clothes, says Johanna Pettersson.

The downpour lasted about an hour.

– At first it rained a little, but then there was a real downpour. Now it’s sunny, she says when Aftonbladet talks to her around 8 p.m.

– During Hans it was windy and rained a little, this is much worse and has affected more people, says Johanna Pettersson.

At 8 p.m., SMHI’s maximum values ​​for Precipitation that it rained most during the day in Prästkulla, 60.1 millimeters of rain, near Nässjö.

Rain and thunderstorms have also affected Östergötland.

At 18:00, the thunder struck a villa in Tallboda in Linköping, reports P4 Östergötland. The villa started to burn and people on site started to put out the fire with garden hoses.

– When we get to the scene, there is smoke and the house is on fire. We have extinguished the fire and now we are looking for construction fires in the roof and walls, says Christian Lind, internal commander of the rescue service for P4 Östergötland.

On SMHI’s maximum value for precipitation, Norrköping is in second place, where it has rained 39 millimeters.

In half an hour between 19.30 and 20.00, ten different emergency calls regarding water damage were received in the city. At 19.45 the police reported that a sinkhole had appeared on a road as a result of the large amounts of rain.

Moving north

The storm is moving north and tomorrow, Wednesday, SMHI’s yellow rainfall warning remains for Östra Svealand and southern Gävleborg. According to SMHI, the rain during Wednesday will move towards northern Norrland.

At 9:30 p.m., the Stockholm police report that several people called in about a loud bang in Kälvesta in western Stockholm. Thunder and lightning had then caused several car alarms to sound.
