Harri Heliövaara and Anna Danilina advance to the mixed doubles finals at the prestigious US Open tennis tournament.

The Finnish-Kazakh pair, playing their first tournament together, defeated the Japanese pair in the semifinals Ena Shibaharan and Croatian Mate Pavic final score 7–6, 6–4.

Heliövaara described the conditions of the match as different, as the weather was hot at the venue in New York.

– It wasn’t really the best day for anyone on the field. My partner Anna played great and we succeeded in tight spots a little better than the opponents. That’s enough, all you need to win is to be better than your opponents. You don’t have to play perfectly, said Heliövaara.

– We did deserve a place in the finals, Heliövaara continued.

Heliövaara and Danilina will meet in the final match on Saturday Austin Krajic too and Jessica Pegula formed by an American couple.

A place in the final of the Grand Slam tournament is a very hard achievement for Heliövaara, writes the Tennis Association in its press release.

Until now, the only Finnish player who has reached the grand slam championship at the adult level is Henri Kontinen, who is the mixed doubles champion from 2016 Wimbledon. Heliövaara himself became the boys’ doubles champion at the Australian Open in 2007.
