Gunman closes German airport

A large police operation began shortly after 8 p.m. when the man with a car forced the gates to the runways, writes Hamburger Morgenpost.

The man is armed and, according to the police, fired two shots into the air when he had made it past all the barriers, writes Die Welt.

There is no information that it is a terrorist crime. According to newspaper reports, the police were alerted by the man’s wife, who stated that the husband had taken the couple’s two children with him and headed towards the airport.

The newspaper Picture writes that he is holding the children hostage in his car, which is parked under an airplane on a runway.

All terminals have been blocked off and the man should not be able to enter any of them.

The operation is ongoing and there are no reports of injuries.
