Grand Parade fundraising walk set for Sept 16

The Grand River Council on Aging hopes to raise $30,000 at the Brantford Grand Parade.

The fundraising event is to be held on Sept. 16, at Kiwanis Field behind Pauline Johnson Collegiate.

“The Grand Parade encourages participation for all, no matter their age or mobility,” said GRCOA executive director Lucy Marco. “The Kiwanis track is ideal for walking and rolling, whether it is with a baby carriage or wheelchair.”

For the second year, local retirement homes are invited to create their own Parade at Home Challenge on their property so staff and residents can take part with banners, balloons, and buttons provided by the Council.

Those unable to attend at Kiwanis Park can also create their own route to parade with family, friends and pets, which are not allowed at Kiwanis Field.

Marco noted that the 55-plus population in Brantford, Brant, and Six Nations is projected to reach 35 per cent of the total population by 2030.

“It’s really important that the work the Council carries out is allowed to go forward into the future,” Marco said. “Our challenge is to raise enough funds to cover our operating expenses.

“In order to reach the $30,000 goal this year, we need to recruit 100 walkers of all ages.”

The Council provides an INFO HUB with more than 350 links to local activities, resources, and services of interest to the older population.

A Seniors’ Discount Directory lists over 250 local businesses that offer discounts to seniors.

Free virtual workshops are also offered to encourage socialization aimed at diminishing social isolation and loneliness that often results in health issues for seniors.

The Grand River Council on Aging is a registered charitable non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging an age friendly community.

“The funds raised will go a long way to maintain the essential programs and resources that keep our seniors connected and engaged,” Marco said.
