Government is still ‘blind to people and law’, benefits affair could happen again

Government is still blind to people and law benefits affair

The parliamentary inquiry, the most demanding investigative instrument available to the House of Representatives, follows an earlier investigation into the benefits affair. That report entitled Unknown Injustice led to the fall of the Rutte III cabinet in early 2021.

For this investigation, the committee conducted two years of research to gain insight into the government’s fraud policy. The use of discriminatory risk profiles, the exchange of information and data from citizens between government organizations and the role of the House of Representatives were examined, among other things. In the autumn, the committee heard dozens of people involved in public, including victims and (former) ministers.
