Google Maps calculates the amount of tolls for you now

Before hitting the road, Google Maps now displays the total cost of tolls on the route in real time. However, the function is only available in four countries, none of which are in Europe.

Users of Google Maps will finally be able to estimate the price of tolls when choosing a route. Google announced the imminent arrival of the function in April for Android and iOS, but it is only now that it is starting to appear according to user feedback, information confirmed by an official publication.

This is a function that was sorely lacking in Google Maps and which placed it behind competitors such as Mappy or ViaMichelin which have included this information, at least for France, for many years. Even Waze has added an estimate of tolls in 2020, based on information shared by its users.

A function limited to four countries

So far, Google Maps indicated the presence of tolls and offered an option to avoid them, but did not offer any estimate as to their cost. Now theapplication displays the amount taking into account subscriptions and time of day. The information comes directly from the authorities or companies that manage the toll, rather than from user reports. However, it does not seem possible at the moment to see the detail of the toll for each route, the amount corresponding to the total is calculated for the whole route. Additionally, Google hasn’t indicated when — or if — the feature will come to the web version of Maps.

However, users in France will have to wait before being able to benefit from it. The feature is currently only available for nearly 2,000 toll roads in the United States, India, Japan and Indonesia. Other countries should arrive “soon”, but Google did not indicate which ones.
