Golf: Former world number one Jordan Spieth washed up: “Takes full responsibility”

The event was overshadowed by Tiger Woods breaking the competition at the Riviera Country Club in California.

“Today I signed an incorrect scorecard and left the competition area, thinking I had gone through all the procedures to make sure it was correct. Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility,” writes Spieth on X.

It was the first time Spieth was washed out of the 263 competitions he completed during his career where he won three majors and was world number one for 26 weeks.

Recorded a bogey as a par

Playing in the same ball as leader Patrick Cantlay, Spieth was for a while in the second round just three strokes behind but dropped and had 73 strokes when he reached the clubhouse. He was then ten strokes behind Cantlay.

The miss already happened on the fourth par 3 hole. He entered a par where he would have reported a bogey instead.

“It hurts not to be able to continue playing over the weekend,” writes Spieth, who would have made the cut if the scorecard had been filled in correctly.

Only Spieth and Tiger Woods did not take home a result from the competition. Spieth is 16th in the world rankings. Despite its relative youth, the best results are quite a few years away. He was world number one in 2016 and won his three majors between 2015 and 2017.
