This was stated by the Minister for Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, in a parliamentary hearing. The acronym stands for Floating Storage and Regasification Units and indicates floating storage and regasification units.
They serve for storing liquefied natural gas supplied by tankers and regasify it for subsequent use on land. They are useful in case an LNG import terminal is not feasible onshore due to lack of space or time for its construction. The decision of the Italian government to supply itself with regasification vessels must in fact be framed in an attempt to reduce dependence on Russian gas through sourcing from other countries.
