Hammarby IF won the Swedish women’s football championship after 38 years of waiting. Finns Anna Tamminen, Eva Nyström and Adelina Engman got to celebrate the championship in Norrköping.
The Swedish football championship in the women’s Damallsvenskan was decided on Saturday in the last round of the series after some great deciding games. There was a tight fight for the championship between Hammarby IF and BK Häcken.
Hammarby, who hails from Södermalm in Stockholm, became the Swedish champion after a 38-year hiatus thanks to goal difference.
Hammarby secured their championship by beating IFK Norrköping 2–0 away from home in the last round. At the same time, Häcken beat Piteå 4–0, but this was not enough to close the goal difference (Hammarby 44 goals plus, Häcken 43).
With the series win, Hammarby also became this year’s double champion, after winning the Swedish cup championship earlier in the summer.
There has also been a strong Finnish representation in the women’s champion team of the green and white club. The number one goalkeeper gets to celebrate the championship Anna Tamminenwho has established his place as a starter in the starting line-up Eva Nyström and was on the sidelines due to injury Adelina Engman. A Finn also played in Häcken, which finished second, Katariina Kosola.
Even though the championship was decided on the away field, the match for the Stockholmers was like a home game. Almost 6,000 “Bajen” supporters had traveled to Norrköping, less than a couple of hours’ drive away. All in all, 8,251 spectators were watching the match on the spot in Norrköping.
The number is historic, because it is according to the club’s active supporters the largest number of visiting Hammarby supporters ever, including the men’s and women’s representative teams of all sports.
Norrköping saw exceptional and wild green and white parties.
