Former Olympic champion who flopped in biathlon changes sport again

Stina Nilsson will continue her sports career next with the long-distance Ski Classics tour of cross-country skiing.

Stina Nilsson30, says according to SVT that he will end his biathlon career and move on to compete on the Ski Classics tour of long ski distances.

– The gun has now been put on the shelf. Let’s see how far I can get, Nilsson told SVT.

Nilsson has signed a two-year contract with the pioneers of marathon travel Jörgen and Anders Aukland With Team Radge Charge from the Ski Classics stable.

– I feel that I have used all my potential as a biathlon skier. Long distance races and Vasaloppet have always interested me. I knew I wanted to do this when the Auklands asked me to join, Nilsson said in the team’s Instagram update.

The change of sport is already the second for the Swede this decade. Nilsson previously achieved success in cross-country skiing and won, among other things, the sprint Olympic gold in Pyeongchang 2018.

After the 2019–2020 season ruined by injury, Nilsson decided to change his sport to biathlon.

The beginning was promising, and in the 2021–2022 World Cup season, Nilsson was once third in an individual race and was part of the Swedish relay team that took second place in Kontiolahti.

On the second-level tour in the IBU Cup, Nilsson reached the top three four times in his career.

In the last two seasons, however, the results remained modest, and Nilsson did not get his established place in the rock-hard Swedish biathlon team.

Nilsson, who collected 19 points in the finished season, was 76th overall in the Women’s World Cup. 94 athletes reached the points of the Cup.

– The first couple of years were really good and I developed well, which I am really proud of. I value my podium place in the World Cup very much, Nilsson told SVT.

– Then there were difficult periods when shooting and skiing did not go as expected. Can be in good shape, shoot well from the prone position and fail from the upright position. In the end I was pretty tired of doing well but something went wrong.

Nilsson says that the decision to switch was easy, just like before.

– I am a person who focuses one hundred percent on something. This has been like closing one book and opening a new one for me.
