Football: Prosecutor Marie Bastin: The clubs have allowed violence for a long time

SVT’s survey of the Allsvenskan clubs shows that a total of 65 people have organizer suspensions in the week before the premiere.

At the same time, 224 people have an access ban.

“The problem lies with the clubs”

But this is not enough, believes Chamber Prosecutor Marie Bastin, who, for example, was responsible for the investigation after a Stockholm derby in 2022, which led to six people being convicted of violent rioting. She is also involved as an expert in the investigation that the government has appointed to review the legislation on the subject.

– We in the judiciary are not the ones who will be able to solve this on our own. The big problem lies with the clubs and the organizers, who have a lot of work to do, she said when she visited Aktuellt this evening, and continued:

– There is a culture that I believe is harmful and dangerous. This kind of violence has been allowed for a long time.

Reinfeldt: “Big folk festival”

The chairman of the Swedish Football Association, Fredrik Reinfeldt, believes that it is positive that there are more bans than before, but is afraid that the problems will continue.

– There is an investigation underway to extend the penalties, and which is looking at an expanded possibility of using camera technology and images to be able to identify the worst perpetrators of violence, he says, but adds:

– But we must have no illusions. There are groups here that are prepared to use violence and disguise themselves to avoid identification and to be held accountable for their actions.

– It is a serious and profound social phenomenon. But I intend to say at the same time that what awaits this weekend is a big folk festival.
