Florida residents climate alarm: “Hard to deny the devastation”

Just over a month after Hurricane Ian, thousands of people in Florida have still not been able to return.

The state is one of the most exposed to climate change in the United States, and the frustration is great that the climate has not become one of the hottest issues ahead of the midterm elections.

– I hope this will be a wake-up call. It should be, look around, says Florida resident Sharon Klap.

In Fort Myers Beach, completely destroyed homes can be seen everywhere – but it is inflation and the abortion issue that dominate the election campaigns before the election.

– It is much more common now than 20 years ago. It is hard to deny that this devastation is largely caused by climate change, says Tim Howard.

The reconstruction of the communities that were destroyed will take several years. Many want to return and rebuild their houses. But not Sharon Klap. She took the risk once, but is not prepared to lose it all again.

– My five best years have probably been here. And now… it’s all gone, she says.
