First trailer for 45 hour World War II epic critically acclaimed

British director Steve McQueen made a name for himself with acclaimed films such as Shame and 12 Years a Slave. Most recently he was also active in the series sector and shot the anthology Small Ax, which in turn consisted of episodes or short films of different lengths.

His latest work, Occupied City, is a mix of McQueen’s cinema roots and the epic series format. The 246 minutes long World War II documentary has now received its first trailer. It was already celebrated in early reviews.

New World War II documentary has already been critically acclaimed

In Occupied City, McQueen creates a portrait of Amsterdam, combining shots from the city’s present with historical flashbacks to the Nazi era in the years 1940 to 1945. Above all, he wants one Connection between past and very current right-wing extremist currents generate.

In the review for the Hollywood Reporter, Sheri Linden writes very positively about the documentary, which she describes as provocative:

[…] The final sequence seems to come out of nowhere, but it is a perfect response to all the loss and suffering and a sharp refutation of the ‘us versus them’ conception of völkisch identity that was the evil engine of the Nazis – and which continues to this day , in various forms, around this planet.With its serene surface and heartbreaking pulse, Occupied City avoids overt emotion until its final moments. And then, amazingly, it gives way to something solemn. It’s one thing for feelings to come out, but it’s quite another something soul-shaking and indefinableafter communicating with the spirits of a city. When does the 4.5-hour war epic start in Germany?

So far all that is certain is that Occupied City on In US cinemas on December 25, 2023 comes. A German start date is not yet known.
