Finns still have a lot to learn about fairness

The reason for the lawsuit is a Hungarian law that makes it illegal to talk about homosexuality and transgenderism in schools and in the media.

In Hungary, Finland’s decision to support the EU Commission’s case against Hungary has aroused fury.

– Our Finnish friends still have a lot to learn about fairness, said the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tamás Menczer on the Hungarian M1 television channel on Thursday.

Finland announced its support after Hungary had ratified Finland’s membership application to the military alliance NATO.

In addition to Finland, fourteen other EU member states support the lawsuit brought to the EU Court of Justice. The reason for the lawsuit is a Hungarian law that makes it illegal to talk about homosexuality and transgenderism in schools and in the media.

Hungary has justified its law with child protection, but according to the EU Commission’s view, it violates basic and human rights as well as lower-level EU regulation.

On Thursday, France and Germany added their names to the list. In addition, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden and the European Parliament have given their support.

Sweden’s NATO membership application is still awaiting the approval of Hungary and Turkey.

STT reported on Thursday, based on information received from various sources, that Finland was considering not defending the lawsuit due to the NATO process.

Finland’s position on the case concerning Hungary is now proceeding along a long line of human rights. Finland has also previously defended the Commission’s infringement lawsuits related to Poland’s rule of law problems.
