Finland’s fastest man does not yet have anything to do with the summer World Championships – however, the expert believes in the possibility of breaking the more than 50-year-old Finnish record

Finlands fastest man does not yet have anything to do

Samuli Samuelsson’s 100-meter Finnish record, the approaching age-old Finnish record at 1500 meters and convincing Silja Kosonen. Urheilu’s expert Jaakko Ojaniemi summarizes the talking points of the Kuortane Games.

Samuli Samuelsson improved his own Finnish record on Saturday in Kuortane. Now it is recorded as 10,12. Last week in Espoo, Samuelsson beat his previous record of 10.16. So there was an improvement of four hundredths of a second.

– After all, 10, 12 is a really hard time. 10 seconds is no longer terribly far, Urheilu’s expert Jaakko Ojaniemi refers to the phantom limit of the journey.

– 10 seconds seems impossible, but it’s not like that. Of course, 12 hundredths is still tight. They won’t come easily, but little by little.

10 seconds is also the result limit for this summer’s World Championships in Budapest. Of course, many also get to the games through the ranking. At the moment, 21 athletes have broken the result limit of the World Championships. 27 are getting in through the ranking.

Despite the record breaking, Samuelsson currently has nothing to do with the World Cup. Before the SE bet of the evening, there were almost 50 other runners between Samuelsson and the last one going to the Games.

The World Championship ranking is calculated from the average of the five best competitions. Ranking points can be obtained not only from the time itself, but also from the level class of the competition and the ranking in the competition.

Samuli Samuelsson’s World Championship ranking points before the Kuortane competition were 1154. With the victory in the Kuortane competition and the recent SE result, the ranking points are 1175.

Even with those points, there are still fifteen other runners between Samuelsson and the last one going to the World Championships.

Ojaniemi believes that a few more hard runs are required from Samuelsson before a World Cup place would be realistic.

– The World Cup place requires a few more similar bets in a pretty good race like now in Kuortane, Ojaniemi states.

Kuortane saw a lot of records on Saturday. Ojaniemi saw that there were good conditions in the background: a good field and quite warm weather. In the men’s 1500 meters as well Joonas Rinne that Santtu Heikkinen clocked their own records.

Rinne clocked 3:37.80 and Santtu Heikkinen clocked 3:38.59. Pekka Vasalan Finland’s record from the 1972 Munich Olympics is already getting close (3:36,33).

The record in question is the second oldest valid Finnish record in athletics.

Markku Kukkoaho made Vasala three days before the 400-meter Finnish record at the Munich Olympics, which is still valid as the oldest of all.

Ojaniemi believes that breaking Vasala’s Finnish record is possible this summer.

– It’s only one and a half seconds. Optimum weather, optimum condition and great charm on top, says Ojaniemi.

The Finnish record was also broken by the thrower Silja Kosonen. He beat the moukari to 73.78. At the same time, Kosonen broke the WC limit. Krista Tervo’s Finnish record is 74.40.

– Making Silja looked good. He was quite disappointed even after the long arcs. He probably didn’t feel that he had accomplished the button toss. I believe that Silja still has a few more meters in stock, Ojaniemi estimates.

The athletics season continues on the channels next weekend with the EC team competitions in athletics.
