Finland’s journey to the World Ice Hockey Championships began with a loss, when the Czech Republic was better in the fast-paced opening match with a score of 4–0. It scored its last two goals on empty nets.
The Czech Republic outplayed Finland outside the rink as well. During the match, the television broadcast showed how the HIFK player Michaela Pejzlova went to tinker with one of the Finnish team’s equipment boxes.
Before the match, Pejzlova went to put a sticker on the side of the box. A video of this also spread on the social media service X.
Defender of the female lions Ronja Savolainen didn’t have time to see the jekku before the match.
– I don’t think anyone else either. I think someone from the team already saw it on Tiktok before the game. Why don’t we put our sticker back there, and it will be balanced, Savolainen threw.
According to Savolainen, similar banter has also been seen in men’s matches.
– It has been a trend on the men’s side as well. There, too, the labels are reversed. It’s nice that it continues here. Now we’ll make it better.
What are you going to tell the Czech Republic about this?
– Can’t the guardians come up with something funny? Let’s put a big sticker on a sharpening machine or similar, Savolainen suggested.
In the opening match of the Games, Finland succumbed to the stronger Czech Republic in front of the goal. The country that won bronze in the previous two World Cups hit loose pucks into the net in the second set and took a 2–0 lead.
In the final set, Finland couldn’t get the ball rolling.
– I am disappointed with the start of our game. What caused it can be speculated, but expectations were higher after the practice game and after this week, head coach Juuso Toivola regretted.
Toivola gave the Czech Republic the credit for the victory.
– We had good moments in the offensive zone, but we made marking mistakes and were a little weaker in duels. They were stuck in the teeth, Toivola said.
Finland’s tournament continues on the night between Thursday and Friday against Canada.
