Finally, Call of Duty’s Anti-Cheat catches the biggest plague of cheaters – Have a good day for all online shooters

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Call of Duty has been working on its anti-cheat system RICOCHET for years and has now celebrated a major milestone. Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 now detect rogue third-party hardware. MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider thinks this is good for all online shooters.

With CoD MW 2019 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2020, the cheaters began to soar in the largest shooter franchise. Cheaters have been a problem in CoD for a long time. Even on consoles, the lobbies were filled with hacked accounts bragging about their unearned max level.

But with the Free2Play Warzone, the cheaters switched gears. Because Call of Duty’s anti-cheat systems were not prepared for how professional the provider landscape had become.

Warzone was temporarily unplayable in some parts of the world. There was at least one cheater in many lobbies, especially at higher gameplay levels. It was a difficult state for all fair players.

At the end of 2021 RICOCHET came and the wind turned slowly

Reports of cheaters screwing up players’ matches have decreased. In October 2022, CoD’s security team showed their progress during the MW2 beta:

  • Back then, 72% of cheaters were banned before they could play
  • Playing cheaters were recognized after an average of 5 matches
  • The problem with these numbers: They were almost exclusively software cheaters. People with a wallhack, aimbot or items that are actually not in the game.

In the meantime, however, the hardware cheaters were the big problem.

Such cheaters use special devices to gain an advantage. For example, you can manipulate the output of a controller in such a way that the device compensates for the entire recoil.

I always found this type of cheating to be a much bigger plague of cheaters than software cheaters. Because it also caused distrust among players and creators.

who is really good Who uses such devices? Who can you still trust?

This led to regular witch hunts. The US streamer Nadia has been suspect and hostile since her first successes. Others felt compelled to set up 5 cameras to prove their innocence.

It is not yet possible to say that this is all over in one fell swoop. But the announcement that RICOCHET should recognize hardware cheaters feels like a liberating blow. For a long time there were doubts as to whether something like this was even possible.

Now the world’s largest shooter franchise has set a new standard in fighting cheaters. Others have to follow suit. The first Apex Legends players on Reddit are already demanding that they definitely need it (via reddit.com).

A really good day for all online shooters.

How’s that going now? It’s not all sunshine yet. We have now “laid the basis for detection” and continue to carry out updates to take action against hardware cheaters.

If such devices are detected, affected players first receive a warning in the main menu. If you still play, it can lead to an account ban that is valid for all CoD titles.

It remains to be seen how effective the measures actually are. But no one can spoil my good mood today.
